Are deodorants safe? Natural powerful alternatives can save the day

We all hate the feeling of having sweaty armpits but the ultimate low is when you get a hint of  your own smell in the underarm area. Then you wished you had used more of that antiperspirant deodorant, right? So, whenever a new deodorant is advertised promising 24 hour or ever 48 hour protection from sweat and your own body scent we tend to buy it. We are somehow trained to an all perfect image of ourselves so when we try to mask the natural function of our body we actually do more harm than good.

Our underarm area is a wonderful gland system that helps up rid of toxins through sweat. Sweat carries bacteria hence the unpleasant smell we want to eliminate with deodorants.

So what is the function of our armpits? Their official name is Axilla and there are more than 20 lymph nodes (small lumps of tissue that are part of the body’s lymphatic system, which helps fight infection) in the armpit where these lymphs cannot be felt through the skin. This area has high concentration of hair follicles and sweat glands.

Now think again, would you block a natural function that helps you stay detoxed and healthy with products that we have no idea what their ingredients mean? Use of deodorants or antiperspirants have been found to be the reason for breast cancer or cause hormonal imbalances in both men and women.

Here are the top toxic ingredients that your deodorant or antiperspirant usually contains and their effects on our system:

  • Aluminum-linked to breast cancer in women, prostate cancer and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Parabens-disruptors of our delicate hormone balance that can lead to things like early puberty in children and an increased risk of hormonal cancers, even infertility
  • Propylene Glycol-can cause damage to liver and heart
  • Phthalates-may disrupt hormones receptors
  • Triclosan-classified as a pesticide by the FDA. Classified as a probable carcinogen by the EPA

  • Fragrance-often is Diethyl Phtahalate or DEP, an endocrine disruptor that has been linked to various reproductive problems.

My awareness on natural health and natural living has been increased from the moment I started to be careful with my nutrition, then naturally it expanded to products I have been using for my personal hygiene. Reading the labels with the ingredients can be somewhat daunting, difficult words to pronounce even. It made clear sense that none of these ingredients would help me in the long run. Threw my deo roll-on, my antiperspirant spray and never looked back!
